Learn Football Vocabulary for the 2022 World Cup

Are you excited about the World Cup? Many of the students at our English language schools overseas are because it’s only a few days away now! If you’re an English language learner, now is the perfect time to start learning some new vocabulary related to football. In this article, we’ll teach you some useful words and phrases that you can use to talk about the World Cup.

First, let’s start with the basics. The World Cup is a global football tournament that takes place every four years. It features 32 national teams from all around the world. This year, the World Cup will be held in Qatar from November 21st to December 18th.

Now that you know a little bit about the World Cup, let’s learn some new vocabulary.

Verbs for playing football

There are many different verbs that can be used to describe playing football (soccer). Here are some of the most common ones:

Kick – When you play soccer, you will kick the ball with your feet to score goals.

Pass – When you play soccer, you will often pass the ball to your teammates to keep possession of the ball.

Boo – when you watch soccer, you may boo the opposing team when they do something bad or make a mistake.

Breathe a sigh of relief – you may breathe a sigh of relief when your team wins or when they avoid doing something bad that could have cost them the game.
